Question from *curious one*: dog cut his forearm (?) area…, am i doing this right?
so on thurs. night my dog somehow cut , or maybe more like slit his forearm (thats what im gonna call it) it slit to the side right under/behind that little nub/ball on the back side of the front leg. we cleaned it with peroxide and applied antibiotic ointment to a gauze pad, and then wrapped it in bandage. my husband had expressed that he felt a vet trip was not neccesary, that it should heal back together just fine. the next morning you could see blood coming through the gauze, so i called my husband, and the vets office and made the appt. upon husband returning home, we cleaned and changed the wrapping, and it seemed to be healing back together fairly well. so we called and cancelled that appt. and for the following few days, we continued to clean and change bandage daily. now this cut/slit is rather deep, but its not so much cut deep inside, as its cut to the side. if that makes any sense…, i would say about 1/2 inch or so. then on sunday we were gone for most of the day, and when we returned home the bandage was off, and on the floor, and im assuming he licked at for , i dont know how long, …and had not only opened the wound back up, but its seemed to be even deeper than before. (im assuming from the excessive licking that im sure was taking place.) the very next day we went in to see the vet. now, i should add that my dog is also undergoing heartworm treatment at this time, and it is costing us a great deal of money. (not that the cost of my dogs care, is ever a issue with me, its just that i cant pay for something with money that i do not have.) the vet said that they could sedate my dog, scrape the wound (because of the healing that had taken place while it was seperated.) and then stitch. for $ 200.00 and some odd dollars. i would have loved nothing more than to have been able to do this for him. but, i just didint have the funds to do so! the vet said it would be perfectly fine to just continue doing what we were doing, because the wound was very clean. and they would send us home with antibiotics, just to help prevent infection from setting in. so this is the route we chose to take. so, FINALLY leading to my question (’s) . has anyone else delt with a cut like this, on there dog, that did heal up just fine? and what if the skin does not go back together, will he just a “open scar”? and how long should it take? and we are also gonna attempt to bathe him tonight, as he is due for a flea treatment and we always bathe him before due to the whole , they cant get wet for so long after applying the topical,…and so then, would it be a good idea to try to take a baggie up over this leg, to keep from wetting the wound? and what about trying to soak it in warm salt water? maybe, to help speed up the healing? any ideas or advice will be greatly appreciated! thank you , for taking the time to read my question! =)

well first let this be a lesson learned- save up money for emergency vet care you may really need it in the future.
second, no I don’t think a vet is needed provided that the wound is kept clean. if it gets infected, he’ll need antibiotics from the vet. so do what you are doing, (although personally I don’t bandage wounds unless the vet told me or unless it was impossible to keep clean unless bandaged) wash it 2x a day or after he’s been laying around or outdoors with mild soap. I like calendula cream instead of antibacterial ointment (calendula is antibacterial, pain reliever and promotes healing)
